Bring motion into photos with Android – Zoetropic

What is Zoetropic?

From the Zoetropic developer:

With Zoetropic you give life to your photos, applying a fantastic motion picture effect, also known as the Cinemagraph effect.

So what are Cinemagraphs?

Cinemagraphs are still photographs in which a minor and repeated movement occurs, forming a video clip. With a Cinemagraph the viewer gets a feeling that he is seeing an animation.

Cinemagraph in which the grass is in motion. Background and other elements are static.

How to make Cinemagraphs with Zoetropic?

Zoetropic helps to introduce motion into an image with the help of various tools built inside it. In fact it fakes a Cinemagraph from a raw image. Below are the major tools available with Plotagraph.

1 – Use the movement tool at each point you want to give life and direct the effect.
2 – With the stabilization tool you define that point not be moved, avoiding undesired distortions. If three stabilization points are connected, a stabilized region is created.
3 – With the mask tool you will define the region of the image that will not have movement.

The output of the tool will be a video.

There is no point in reading the theory and beating around the bush to understand the app. Instead let’s just get hands on to it. You can download the free version of the app from Google Play. Fire it up! And below is a video tutorial of Zoetropic in action. Do watch and let me know your thoghts.

Other alternative apps

  1. Motion Picture
This isn’t as great as Zoetropic. It is a comparatively newer app. So it has the beginner glitches but still worth a try.
  2. Loopsie
Loopsie has been around for a while. It works a bit different as compared to Zoetropic. That is, it first allow us to take a short video from its built in camera. Then we can configure necessary parts of the video to be static.

Note: To remove the watermark you have to purchase the Pro version from Google Play
